A Narrative History of the Milton-Freewater Darts Association (MFDA)
Robby Robbins, his wife Bell, and daughter, Patti (Robbins) Bennett, first started
playing darts while he was on an exchange tour with the Royal Navy, in England, as
his last tour of duty before he retired from the U.S.Navy on 1 September 1975.
When we got back to Milton-Freewater we did not expect to find any dart players,
let alone a dart league in operation. We played on the dart board that we brought
back with us until Bob and Alice Bascom came to M-F and opened the Coast-to-Coast
Store. Patti went to work at the Coast-To-Coast Store shortly after Bob opened. Patti
was talking to Bob one day and the subject of darts came up. Bob said he had played
in Phoenix before he came up here and liked the game. Patti invited Bob and Alice
over for a game and we got to talking about the possibility that other people, like
ourselves, might have played darts in other areas of the country. That’s how we got
things started in this area. Bob talked to the manager at the Elks Lodge and he let
him put up a board for a short time and we found a few more potential players. The
location in the Elks Lodge really wasn’t suitable for darts and Bob kept looking.
Finally, he discussed it with Dan Hopkins at the Inn Between Tavern. Dan agreed to
move one of the pool tables and allow space along one wall for two boards. That exposure
developed more interest as we started to meet there on Thursday nights just to play
matches with whoever showed up.
By mid-82 there were about 20 players with enough interest to start a small league.
We even got sponsors to supply the funds to get the boards and support equipment.
The sponsors included:
Inn Between Tavern - Coast to Coast - Rural Fire Dept. - Tamarack Inn
We started playing in September 1982 and played until mid-November 1982 to avoid
any conflict with holiday schedules. During that year we made contact with some of
the Tri-Cities Darts Association members and the league officers from the Hermiston
Darts Organization. They helped us get our league organized and running smoothly.
Some of our players had enough interest in the game to travel to Hermiston and Tri-Cities
to participate in tournaments.
That league continued into 1983 and ran from January to late April 1983. During that
league we got the team captains together and made the initial effort toward organizing
the Milton-Freewater Darts Association (MFDA). Bob Bascom was elected the first president
in June of 1983.

It was appropriate that Bob be elected president. He was the primary driving force
in getting the MFDA organized. He did most of the work in contacting potential players
and sponsors. He even set up a Junior Dart League for teenagers during this year.
Unfortunately, a playing area outside the tavern could not be located and that group
is temporarily on ‘hold’ until a suitable location becomes available. 1983 was a
year of growth and organization.
15 September 1993 - The first night of the 1983 fall league was played at the Inn
Between Tavern with 4 teams. The last night of this league was 10 November 1983.
November of 1983 - We held our first tournament at the Inn Between Tavern. The president
of the Tri-Cities Darts Association had encouraged us to set up a tournament to draw
more players from the immediate area, as well as making players in other cities aware
of our organization. That first tournament drew about 30 players including several
from Hermiston and the Tri-Cities. We had invited players from Enterprise but the
weather prevented them from coming. Our first tournament was a little rough for organization
since we didn’t really know how many participants we would have in each event, but
it turned out quite well.
05 January 1984 - The first night of league play at the Inn Between Tavern with 6 teams.
23-25 March 1984 - We set up the ‘Early Fools Day Shoot’ with much better success. Again it was at the Inn Between Tavern. This tournament drew about 50-60 players, again with the support of the Hermiston and Tri-Cities Darts Associations. By this time we were better organized and had more boards set up permanently, but we still had to set up a few temporary boards to have enough room.
April 1984 - The league elected Mark Rodighiero as the president for the 1984-85 year. Bob Bascom, as past president, acted as advisor and volunteered to develop a preliminary set of By-Laws to operate under. The first draft of those By-Laws was distributed to the Board of Directors in October 1984.

23 August 1984 - The first night of league play at the Inn Between Tavern with two new teams, Pendleton #1 and Pendleton #2 for a total of 8 teams.
January 1985 - We added two teams, Fred’s Market and Penrod II for a total of 10 teams. During this league we had one Pendleton team stay in Pendleton each week to play one of the teams from M-F. Play in Pendleton was at the Riverside Pub. The Pendleton Teams changed their names to ‘Riverside Rogues’ and ‘Riverside Ringers’. The owners of the Riverside Pub, Steve and Elaine Crane, played darts in Portland, Oregon before coming to Pendleton.
19 January 1985 - On the way back to Hermiston on highway 395, from an Intercity match in Tri-Cities, the van driven by Dave LaPlante skidded on the ice and went in the ditch. Dave’s girlfriend, Terry Smith was killed at the scene. Dave suffered injuries to his spinal column and was paralyzed from the neck down. The other passengers, Greg Caudle and Baron _______ were badly bruised but not severely injured. Dave underwent several operations and some very intensive physical therapy at the VA Hospital in Portland. While not a member of the MFDA, they were very nice people and very popular with all of the dart players. We all had become very good friends. They were also the catalyst in the Hermiston Darts League and the loss essentially ended the league. Many of the players never threw another dart. For several years after the accident, the few Hermiston players who continued to play darts, held a ‘Terry Smith Memorial Dart Tournament’ and the funds were donated to Dave’s medical costs. Players from Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Pendleton, and Tri-Cities came out for the tournaments.
15-17 February 1985 - The ‘First Annual Heart Break Tournament’ was held at the Inn Between Tavern. This tournament drew 74 shooters from Athena, Enterprise, Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Pendleton, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla, and Weston. This was a very good shoot and everyone seemed to enjoy it. By now we had become very good friends with many of the players from the other clubs.
02 May 1985 -The last night of the 1985 spring league. Awards Night was 09 May 1985.

14-16 February 1986 - The 2nd Annual Heart Break Tournament was played at the Inn Between Tavern. George Kaup was Tournament Director. There were 96 participants from 10 cities. This Tournament was much better organized and attended than any of our previous events. It turned out very well.
17 April 1986 - The last night of the 1986 spring league was played at the Inn Between Tavern. This was the last night of play at this location as Dan Hopkins had decided to bring a band back into the tavern on Thursday night. Awards Night was 24 April 1986.

18 September 1986 - During the summer on 1986, John and Diane Sicocan bought the
Nite Train Tavern in Milton-Freewater and began remodeling to make it the Nite Train
Steakhouse. On 18 September 1986 the players held a Blind Draw Doubles opening night
tournament there. Since the restaurant wasn’t open yet, we held a pot luck dinner
in the upper dart area. There were several new players from the Walla Walla Soft
Tip Dart League who will join our league this year. The league began on 25 September
with 8 teams. The last night of play was 22 December 1986.
15 January 1987 - The first night of the 1987 spring league at the Nite Train Steakhouse
with 8 teams.

29 April - 01 May 1988 - The Terry Smith Memorial Tournament was held in Hermiston. Many of our players went to the tournament. (See 19 Jan. 1985)
08 September 1988 - The first night of the 1988 fall Dart season was played at the Nite Train Steakhouse. The 3rd week, was played 22 September 1988 at the Nite Train Steakhouse. The Nite Train closed 30 September and no other location was immediately available. After several weeks of searching, Ed and Claudia Granger found space at the Tepee Restaurant and Lounge, 513 N. Main St., Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Jan Childers, the owner, seemed interested in having the league play there on a regular basis. On
22-23 October we put the boards up in the ‘Card Room’ of the Tepee Lounge. On
27 October we played a ‘Blind Draw Doubles’ fun night at the Tepee. The small turn-out
for the fun night was expected due to players who were hunting or off on other activities.
We continued to play the Blind Draw format every Thursday night until league play
resumed on 12 January 1989. Jan played a few nights.
05 January 1989 - An attempt to get the 1989 spring league started at the Tepee Restaurant
and Lounge did not net enough teams to even start that night. Of the members who
were there, we were able to form four 5-person teams and we started league play on
12 January 1989.
24-26 February 1989 - The 5th Annual Heartbreak Shoot was played at the Tepee
Restaurant and Lounge, 513 N. Main St., Milton-Freewater, Oregon. A total of 46 players
from 11 cities participated.
The Tepee Lounge didn’t turn out to be the best location for the league and they
didn’t seem too interested in continuing the support, so Ed and Claudia made arrangements
for the league to return to the Inn Between Tavern on the Milton-Freewater Highway.
20 April 1989 - The last week of the league.

02 February 1990 - After the 4th week, the ‘Bankers Life’ team quit, leaving the league with only 8 teams. We continued the 9 team rotation through the remainder of the first half so that all teams would play using the same format of 9 teams on 8 boards with one team getting a ‘BY’ each week.

19-21 October 1990 - ‘Marathon of Hope’ dart tournament with the funds donated to the Dave LaPlante Operation Fund. (See 19 Jan. 1985). Dave had been advised of some new technology surgery that might help him get more movement back in his hands and arms and perhaps even some back in his legs. The tournament collected $1000.00 for the fund. Since the accident Dave underwent several operations and some very intensive physical therapy at the VA Hospital in both Palo Alto, CA and Portland, OR. After a couple of years he was able to move his arms and hands a little and gets around in a wheelchair with some help. 30 players from Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Pendleton, and Tri-Cities came out for the tournament. Special rules and ‘Woody’ darts were used for the tournament. It was a lot of fun and Dave was at the tournament. It was good to see him again but sad to see him unable to throw a dart.

year in honor of Lanny Myers who so personified the word ‘sportsmanship’. He was
one of the small group of players who originally got the Milton-Freewater Darts Association
started in 1983. Lanny passed away on 19 February 1991.

We planned to play using the ‘Intercity Format’, but we only had 28 players so we formed them into six 3-man teams. This was the first time the MFDA played a schedule that covered more than 10-11 weeks. In previous years, we played a January-April league and another league line-up for the September-December league. 27 June 1994 - Bell Robbins, Ronna Garrison, Carolyn McCane, Robby Robbins meet with the Elks Lodge Board of Directors. Presented drawings of requirements to install the boards, lights, etc.. We provided a preliminary document setting out the responsibilities and accountability of each organization. The Elks Lodge wanted to change the league name to Milton-Freewater Elks Dart League, for league play to begin at 7:45 rather than 7:30, and a few other minor changes. There would be no requirement for MFDA members to become ELKS, and no minimum number of ELKS members on the league. Jamie thought some of the requests were more than the MFDA Executive Board could make without further discussion.
11 July 1994 - The Executive Board met to discuss the possibility of playing at the Elks Lodge, the Horse Shoe Club, and/or the Pastime. Only 4 additional members came out for the meeting. It was proposed and passed that we play the league and tournaments at the Elks Lodge. We put 3 boards up at the Horse Shoe Club for anyone to practice on at any time.
